Why a company costs more per hour
The gap is not margin. It is what the rate has to cover:
- Public liability insurance — if something in your home is damaged, it is covered
- Employer’s liability insurance — if the cleaner is injured in your home, you are not exposed
- Vetting and DBS checks
- Cover when your cleaner is ill or on holiday
- Equipment, products and training
- Someone to complain to who is not the person who did the work

Fortnightly costs slightly more per visit than weekly, because two weeks of dust takes longer to clear than one. It is still cheaper overall.
What pushes the price up
- Bathrooms, not bedrooms. Bathrooms and kitchens take the time. Three bedrooms and one bathroom is a quicker job than two bedrooms and three bathrooms.
- Clutter. Cleaners clean; they do not tidy. A surface covered in objects has to be cleared, wiped and reset — which can double the time in a room.
- Pets. Hair on soft furnishings and skirtings adds real time.
- Frequency. A property cleaned weekly stays inside its slot. One cleaned monthly rarely does.
- Ironing and laundry. Usually charged separately or as extra hours.
- Products and equipment. Some cleaners use yours, some bring their own and charge for it.
The single cheapest thing you can do to reduce your cleaning bill is tidy surfaces before the cleaner arrives. It is not laziness on their part — every object on a worktop is a lift, a wipe and a replace.
One-off cleans
One-off jobs are priced higher per hour, typically £22–£35, because there is no ongoing relationship to spread travel and admin across, and because a property that has not been cleaned recently takes longer.

Paying a cleaner: what to know
- Cash is legal, but ask for a receipt. No paper trail means no recourse.
- Check employment status. If you set a self-employed cleaner’s hours, provide all equipment and they work only for you, you may in practice be an employer — with the obligations that brings.
- Agree cancellation terms up front. 24–48 hours’ notice is standard both ways.
- Agree key arrangements in writing, including who holds them and what happens if the relationship ends.
- Confirm holiday cover before you need it.
